How to Download Google Books for free?

Google Books provides access to a large library of ebooks. The Google Books search engine and the Google Play Books store are both available. Both sites allow you to download copies of books to read offline. So, here is how you may get books through Google Books.

Search Engine for Books on Google

Let's start by looking at how to get a free book from Google Books.

What Is Google Books and How Does It Work?

Since 2004, the Google Books search engine has been available. It allows you to search through over 30 million books that Google has scanned and converted into text using OCR. There are also a few publications included.

When you click on a search result, you'll see scanned pages, book information (including author, release date, and blurb), and links to buy the title in a digital or print version.
You can also write a review for the book and save it to your library.

Is it possible to get any title from Google Books for free?

No. Google Books assigns one of four access levels to each title. They are as follows:

  • There will be no preview: You won't be able to see any of the book's text if Google hasn't yet scanned it. However, you will continue to have access to its metadata and ISBN.
  • You will be able to see up to three snippets of text if Google does not hold the relevant copyright permissions. A few sentences on either side of a certain query are shown in the snippets. For reference books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries, no snippets are displayed.
  • The majority of Google Books books are in the Preview category. They're available for books that are still in print and for whom the copyright owner has given Google permission. You will be able to explore a variable number of pages if a book is in the Preview category. You cannot download, save, or copy any of the pages because they are watermarked.
  • Full View: Google categorizes books that are no longer in print and are in the public domain as Full View. There are a few out-of-print novels included as well. This is the only category where you can get Google Books books to download.

What Is the Best Way to Download Books From Google Books?

So, how can you get books in the Full View category from Google Books?

We recommend using the Google Books Advanced Search option unless you know exactly which out-of-print title you're looking for. It allows you to choose a number of parameters, one of which is the book's category. Obviously, Full View is the best option.

Keywords, favorite publishers, authors, ISBNs, ISSNs, and titles can also be entered. When you're ready, click the Google Search button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Click on the title of the book you're looking for from the list of results. The information page for the book will appear. The download link is located in the upper left-hand corner. EBOOK—FREE is the title.

You can see which devices you can read the book on and which additional features (such as flow reading and scanned pages) the book supports by lingering over the link.

When you click the link, you'll get another popup asking you to confirm your selection. After selecting Read, the book will appear in the Google Play Store's My Books area. To download it, select Download PDF or Download EPUB from the three dots on the listing (depending on availability).

Google Play Books

Google Play Books is the company's online bookstore. It's the web's second-largest ebook store, after Amazon. It has almost six million titles available for purchase. You may also rent textbooks and buy audiobooks on the portal.

How to Download Google Play Books Books

You may use Google Play Books to download any book you possess and read it offline. Depending on whether you purchased the book or received it for free, you will have different alternatives.

You can download a PDF or EPUB version of a free ebook from your library (either because you saved it from Google Books using the previous approach or because you took advantage of a free ebook deal on the store itself). The file is then yours to copy, reproduce, and share as you see fit.

Paid novels, on the other hand, can only be downloaded to your device for offline reading.

You'll need either the Google Play Books smartphone app (for mobile devices) or the Chrome browser and the Play Books extension from the Chrome Web Store to download the books (for desktops).

Install Google Play Books on your Android or iOS device.

Follow the steps below to download a book on your mobile device:

  • Download the Google Play Books app for free from the appropriate app store.
  • Make sure your device is connected to the internet.
  • At the bottom of the screen, select the Library tab.
  • To save a book for offline reading, tap on it.

The process of downloading will begin automatically. When it's done, a tick will appear on the thumbnail of the book.

Go to Menu > Downloaded Only to view the books you've already downloaded from Google Play.
